Causes Of The Pelopenesian War Essay -- essays research papers

The Causes of the Peloponessian War      Ancient Greece during the fourth century B.C. was home to the city-conditions of Sparta and Athens. These two networks were the superpowers of the locale during that time. The peloponnesian war between these two states developed out of a series of occasions that would prompt long periods of contention.      When searching for a solitary reason for the peloponnesian war none can be found. After some time numerous occasions added to the possible war among Sparta and Athens. I accept the peloponnesian war developed in view of Athenian help for Spartan foes, Spartan caution at an ascent in Athenian force, and the extraordinary contrasts between the two societies.           In 435 B.C., Corcyra, a Corinthian settlement announced itself autonomous of Corinth. Corinth reacted by sending an armada to lessen the revolting island city. In dread Corcyra engaged Athens for help and influenced by the Corcyrain ambassadors, the Athenians sent military guide. A fight occurred, in which the naval forces of Corcyra and Athens battled against those of Corinth. Sparta, who was aligned with Corinth and depended upon it as a wellspring of pay, saw the Athenian help of the Corcyrain revolts as a demonstration of animosity against the peloponnesian group (Sparta and her partners). The union made among Athens and Corcyra was additionally seen as an infringement of the harmony bargain of 445 B.C. between the peloponnesian class and the Athenian association. Athens disregarded all Spartan dissent about its contribution in the Corcyrain crusade. Further quarrel was made among Sparta and Athens in 432 B.C. in Potidaea. Potidaea was a city that wa s tributary to Athens however Corinthian in blood. Tired of paying tribute to Athens the residents of Potidaea endeavored to remove the Athenian force. Athens’ warriors attacked the city and by and by Athenians were engaging Corinthians. Corinth, helping the individuals of Potidaea confronted a ban by Athens. Rankled by this demonstration Sparta claimed the Athenians to end the ban, yet was overlooked. Sparta conviened the peloponnesian board and Greece drew one stage nearer to the peloponnesian war. It could be contended that Sparta and Athens were at that point planning for war with one another and that the help of their allies’ wars against one another was not an immediate reason for the war but rather si... ...prompted a characteristic doubt between the two societies. Pericles, the Athenian ruler previously and during the Peloponessian war once thought about the â€Å"living power of Athenian opportunity with the dead hand of Spartan tyranny†. Thucydides once cited a Spartan depicting the Athenians; â€Å" The Athenians are dependent on advancement, and their plans are described by quickness the same in origination and execution; you have a virtuoso for keeping what you have, joins by an all out need of innovation, and when compelled to act you never go far enough. Again they are brave past their capacity, and brave past their judgment †¦Ã¢â‚¬ These two statements show a reasonable abhorrence between the two people groups. The two superpowers, so extraordinary in culture couldn't maintain a strategic distance from struggle, strife that inevitably brought about the peloponnesian war.      The underlying foundations of the peloponessian war can be followed back to numerous particular occurrences yet on the most section three primary components caused its ascent; Sparta’s outrage at Athenian guide to Spartan adversaries, Spartan dread of Athenian force, and the threatening vibe and question brought about by the extreme contrasts between the two social orders. The peloponnesian war was unavoidable.

Diagnosing Alcohol Use Disorder

Diagnosing Alcohol Use Disorder Addiction Alcohol Use Print Diagnosing Alcohol Use Disorder By Buddy T facebook twitter Buddy T is an anonymous writer and founding member of the Online Al-Anon Outreach Committee with decades of experience writing about alcoholism. Learn about our editorial policy Buddy T Updated on July 26, 2019 Image Source/Getty Images More in Addiction Alcohol Use Binge Drinking Withdrawal and Relapse Children of Alcoholics Drunk Driving Addictive Behaviors Drug Use Nicotine Use Coping and Recovery Do you want a drink so badly you cant think of anything else? Find out if you meet the latest criteria for an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Diagnosing AUD can be tricky since the diagnosis depends on the person doing the drinking being willing to honestly answer a series of questions about drinking patterns and attitudes. AUD is the medical term for alcohol abuse, like binge drinking, or it can be used to mean alcohol dependence, such as your body goes into withdrawal without alcohol. Alcohol dependence is alcoholism. Denial Makes Diagnosis More Difficult Getting an honest answer about alcohol use and its effects on your life can be a problem because a common symptom of alcoholism is denial. An old adage about alcoholism is its the only disease that denies it exists and resists treatment. If you cannot be honest about your drinking habits, it is difficult, if not impossible, to accurately diagnose an AUD.   A health care professional is unlikely to give an AUD diagnosis during routine visits because this condition is misdiagnosed more than 70 percent of the time. Sometimes it can be difficult to admit to a health professional about your drinking habits and patterns. There are many online alcohol screening tests you can take on your own if you are not ready to talk out loud about your drinking. Family and Friends See the Problem Long before a health care worker gives an AUD diagnosis, friends and family can usually recognize the problem. They may try to talk to you about the problem and encourage you to get help, but again, denial comes into play. Denial is so common in people with alcohol abuse problems that denial itself is a warning sign of alcoholism. A person who drinks a lot simply can not see or refuses to admit  that alcohol use is a problem. Diagnostic Tools for AUD There are many diagnostic tests health professionals use to screen for and evaluate drinking problems. To overcome denial, most health professionals do not ask direct questions about the number of drinks  but instead, ask questions about problems associated with drinking instead. Short, four-to-five question alcohol screening tests, such as the FAST test, are effective in the initial screening to detect AUD, while longer, more elaborate tests do a more in-depth evaluation and assessment. Alcohol Dependence Criteria According to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, health professionals may give an AUD diagnosis if you meet two of 11 criteria within a 12-month period. Depending on the number of criteria you meet, your level of alcohol abuse or  alcohol dependence can be categorized as mild, moderate or severe. You drink more or longer than intendedYou want to stop or tried to modify your drinking habits more than once, but cannotYou spend a lot of your time drinking or being hungoverYou want a drink so badly that you can not concentrate on anything elseDrinking and being hungover has interfered with your responsibilities to your family, job, and homeYou continue to drink even though it causes trouble with family and friendsYou give up important and enjoyable activities in order to drinkYou get into situations after drinking, such as driving or walking in a high-crime neighborhood, which have increased your chances of injuring yourselfYou continue to drink even though it made you feel depressed, anxious, and/or blackoutYou need to drink more than you did before to get the same effectYou feel withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea and sweating?

Second Industrial Revolution - Free Essay Example

The Second Industrial Revolution and World War II drastically changed society on both an economic and societal scale. The revolution was a technological advancement which was a result of increased human intellectualism. The revolution signified the creation of the American urban economy that is in-effect today. World War II was a time of unity that progressed social equality and sustained the economic growth that began during the Industrial Revolution. A further analysis of the Second Industrial Revolution and World War II will exemplify their impacts on the United States both economically and societally. Although there are distinct differences between the two time periods, World War II and the second Industrial Revolution introduced eras of unprecedented technological and societal advancements. During the Industrial Revolution, national transportation created a link of communication which increased the speed of innovation. This link led to increased food preservation, extended the duration of human life, and brought about a dependable economy that wasnt seen before in America. Connecting previously isolated rural areas with urban areas, the economy transformed into a capitalist industry requiring more technological skill. By the end of this time period, the United States had become the global leader of industrial power and turned itself from an agrarian, self-independent society into an industrial urban economy. Select businessmen arose to extreme money and power. Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and J. Pierpont Morgan used business techniques such as creating monopolies and trusts that lead them to dominating Americas economy. These advances allowed the economy to expand in an unstable way. The expansion of factories into corporations eliminated small shop owners making the worker-boss relationship impersonal. This lack of relationship type of labor made it easier for industries to hire unskilled workers vs skilled. Companies began hiring immigrants from Asia and Europe saturating the labor market. Therefore laborers feared their economic status was decreasing. Laborers worked in very poor conditions for long hours and low wages. Laborers began to feel industrialism was another form of slavery. The Knights of Labors was the nations first attempt to unite laborers into one union. They saw inequality amongst them and industrialists. They coined the idea of cooperative commonwealth which was the belief that laborers should own factories and railroads not in a socialist way, but as owners and producers sense. Worker Unions conducted multiple strikes such as the Great Railroad Strike 1877 and the 1892 Homestead Strike. It is important to note the shift in social equality. As people migrated to the urban areas there was a push for racial and gender equality. The Knights were the first to try to organize all workers including women and blacks. Therefor the conflict between laborers and industrialists brought about more social equality. The revolution required a large working class which increased the migration population. There was a huge asian immigrant population. Many americans were not happy of this because they felt like the immigrants crowded the labor force and blamed them for the lowering wages and fear of more immigrants arriving in the future. This resulted to new political policies in the American government. Immigration law excluded specific ethnic groups such as the 1880 Chinese Exclusion Act and later the Gentlemens Agreement Acts of 1917. The Exclusion Act banned future Chinese from immigrating to America and put extreme penalties on people who attempted to do so illegally. The average family during the Industrial Revolution was poorer compared to the average family during WWII. Women and children began to work in factories to provide for their families. Women and children labor were undergoing harsh conditions, and skilled males were receiving low wages equal to unskilled workers. The Lowell Mills Textile Factory was a famous factory known for the harsh working conditions women endured. Even though their areas of occupation were limited, it was the first time in American history women were allowed to join the workforce. The mass production system created during the Industrial Revolution proved to be beneficial during WWII. WWII was considered the good war because of the societal, economic, and political unity. The economy depended more on women since majority of young males were being drafted. Factories that manufactured steel, temporarily turned into factories that manufactured war equipment. The economy boomed because America became a huge international supplier of war equipment. The economy during WWII resulted in keeping the US the top country in the world. The treatment of the japanese population worsened. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Pacific Wars began. A war mentality of, kill the Japs and creation of concentration camps for all Japanese lead to higher prejudice towards Japanese. During WWII, womens field of occupation expanded. They were allowed to go to war zones as nurses to treat the wounded. In fact, women were encouraged to provide this service to their country as proven through the varied propaganda featuring women empowerment. All young men were asked to be drafted into the military, and only one-half of 1% refused. Unlike previous wars, whites over came prejudices toward some ethnic and religious groups. WWII put men in circumstances of extreme vulnerability where they had no choice, but to trust each other. These circumstances exposed men to a much greater range of individuals and groups than most had ever known. Therefore combat platoons allowed men to learn to include Jews, Catholics, and white southerners and reject overtly racist patterns of thought and behavior. Social and economic standards were raised during the Second Industrial Revolution and World War II. The previous agrarian economy was now transformed into an industrialized economy, with production at an all time high. Equality amongst genders gradually improved, expanding into the workplace, with women finding employment in factories. This trend continued into the Second World War as there was a drastic increase of women in the workplace. Ultimately, the second Industrial Revolution introduced ideals that were eventually implemented during World War II.

The Metamorphosis of Guy Montag Essay - 2120 Words

Ray Bradbury originally wrote his novel, Fahrenheit 451, as an indictment against the censorship evident during the McCarthy era of America, and it has since become one of the few modern science fiction books that can be considered a classic. The adulation of this novel is due to its plethora of symbols, metaphors, and character development. Bradbury’s character development is singularly impressive in this book because he shows the evolution of the main character, Guy Montag, â€Å"from book-burner to living-book† (Johnson 111). His maturity is displayed by his growing understanding of the world in which he lives and by seeing the flaws in his society. Bradbury illustrates Montag’s metamorphosis with him changing from a mindless burning drone†¦show more content†¦Montag’s first reaction is to laugh off Clarisse’s questions; he seems uneasy with the thought of reading. His emotions and laughing reaction reveal his nervousness around a young girl, who can so easily challenge the values that he has followed all his life. Clarisse is also important because she awakens Montag to the natural world. She asks him if he knew there was a man on the moon, or if he knew what it means when a dandelion rubs off on a chin. Clarisse is the one who introduces Bradbury’s theme that â€Å"[n]ature is good and technology is bad† (Huntington 113). Clarisse lets Montag experience freedom from his society because â€Å"[t]he novel expresses this vision of freedom with images of sentimentalized nature† (Huntington 112). She leaves him feeling that something in Montag’s world has changed, that â€Å"[h]e was not happy†¦[h]e wore his happiness like a mask and the girl had run off across the lawn with the mask† (Bradbury 12). Flood Myth of the Holy Bible and the Epic of Gilgamesh...

The Biblical Flood and The Epic of Gilgamesh Flood In Genesis of the Old Testament the account of the Flood approximates the account recorded on Tablet 11of the Sumero-Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh, discovered in the 1800’s by British archaeologists in Assyria. N.K. Sandars in the Introduction to his book, The Epic of Gilgamesh, sums up the involvement by the pagan gods in the Sumero-Babylonian Flood narrative: In the Gilgamesh flood Ishtar and Enlil are as usual the advocates of destruction. Ishtar speaks, perhaps in her capacity as goddess of war, but Enlil prevails with his weapon of the storm. Only Ea, in superior wisdom, either was not present, or being present was silent, and with his†¦show more content†¦In Column 2 of Tablet 11 the Sumero-Babylonian Flood narrative continues with the measurements and construction of the ark: One acre was its whole floorspace; ten dozen cubits the height of each wall; ten dozen cubits its deck, square on each side. I [Utnapishtim] laid out the contours, drew it all. I gave it six decks and divided it, thus, into seven parts. Its innards I divided into nine parts. I struck water-plugs into it. I checked the poles and laid in all that was necessary. I poured 24,000 gallons of bitumen into the kiln; the same amount I laid on the inside. The basket-bearers brought on three shars of oil in addition to the shar of oil consumed in the seed-meal and the two shars of oil stowed away by the boatman.(Gardner 231) On the seventh day the ark was completed. It was launched, and then loaded with â€Å"all my kin and family† and with â€Å"the animals of the fields.† This ark has twice the number of floors as Noah’s ark. The Mexican Drug War and Its Consequences Free Essays

The Mexican Drug War and Its Consequences Despite President Felipe Calderon’s good intentions and determination to eliminate the drug cartels in Mexico, the Mexican government has not been able to stop the drug cartel’s operations (smuggling drugs, people and weapons to and from the USA) for many reasons. The drug cartels have proven to be powerful, well connected politically, well trained, well- armed, and manipulation of the masses. Therefore, it has been impossible for the Mexican government to stop cartels like La Familia from operating, and now the cartels have become a problem for the Unites States too. We will write a custom essay sample on The Mexican Drug War and Its Consequences or any similar topic only for you Order Now The Mexican cartels have proven to be unstoppable for the Mexican government. President of Mexico Felipe Calderon’s decision to send fifty thousand soldiers and twenty thousand federal police has not been enough to stop the cartel’s indiscriminate killings. According to the University of San Diego Trans-Border Institute of Analysis and Data, since January of 2007, 28,228 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico (Sandiego. edu). Going muscle to muscle with the cartels has proven to be the wrong decision. Sending all those troops and federal police has only served to increases the death toll. Cartels like La Familia are well armed and trained. According to intelligence, members of La Familia must complete three to six month training camp in Michoacan, conducted by ex-members of the Colombian or Mexican Special Forces. La Familia uses equipment, weapons, and uniforms similar to those of the Federal Investigations Agency, therefore operating without being detected in cities and on highways (La Familia Michoacana fact sheet, DEA). It is a fact that La Familia is well armed with weapons that come from the United States. La Familia has the connections and the money to buy these weapons; Calderon continues to send more troops to combat the cartel, but this military effort will not work. La Familia cannot be stopped since they know how to manipulate the masses, by threats and targeting opposing citizens, and this makes the situation even worse for the Mexican government as they try to obtain help from citizens to capture the leaders. La familia has won the loyalty of many people through political and Christian beliefs, but mostly through intimidation. In the article â€Å"Silver or Lead,† we can see how a regional official named Veronica Medina has selective hearing in favor of La Familia. Medina is clearly in favor of La Familia even though she works for the Mexican government. It could be quite possible that Medina is on La Familia’s payroll. La Familia is known to win favors by offering monetary rewards. La Familia also intimidates people with violence; they take over a town and tell the mayor, â€Å"We want to work here. There will be no trouble, no crime, no drunkenness, nothing. † Then, they enforce their rules. Mayors are usually paid for their hospitality. It is silver or Lead (Finnegan 48). How can regional officials decline? Since they are substantially underpaid and their lives are threatened, they are almost forced if they don’t they face almost certain death at the hands of the cartel. As long as the Mexican government continues with this plan of combatting cartel, it will never see the end of the cartel. Mexico is a traditional Catholic country; most of the Catholics practicing in North America live in Mexico. La Familia uses this religious fervor to gain the sympathy of the people’s town. La Familia knows they will gain sympathy and new people who want to work for them if their organization somehow shows they are Christian believers. La Familia wants people to think that they only kill those who have committed a crime. According to William Finnegan â€Å"La Familia doesn’t kill for money, it doesn’t kill women, it doesn’t kill innocent people–only those who deserve to die. Everyone should know: this is divine justice† (Finnegan 40). These words were actually written on a sign left by La Familia at one of their assassination sites. Their propaganda implies the need for divine justice. They are trying every way possible to make people believe they are doing God’s work. The Mexican church has not said anything about it, and there are people who are led to believe that perhaps some of the violent works of the La Familia are necessary and maybe even justified. La Familia’s smuggling business has a big negative effect on America society and economy. Since La Familia is willing to pay the exorbitant amounts of money for necessary costly weapons, it entices Americans into breaking the law by getting involved in the illegally sales of arms. In February 2007, drug cartels gunmen attacked two offices of the Guerrero state attorney general’s office in the resort town of Acapulco, killing four officers and three secretaries. One of the rifles used in the attack was traced back to the United States (guns without borders). Federal agents say about 90 percent of the 12000 pistols and rifles that the Mexican authorities recovered from drug dealers in the United States are mostly from Texas and Arizona (McKinley 1). Every gun smuggler captured is sent to prison, and the government has to house him and fed him, costing taxpayers thousands of dollars a year. Drug addiction costs the U. S. billions in health care. According to the 2008 National Survey of Drug Use and Health, approximately three million Americans 12 or older initiated the use of an illicit drug. That is nearly 8000 people per day (2008 national survey of drug and health). More than half of all people arrested in the United States test positive for illegal drugs. Drug use is closely connected to robbery and property crime. Substances abused led directly to the death of 38000 Americans (Executive Office of the President of the United States). The drug cartels are clearly affecting America Society and their economy. The U. S. government needs to work harder to implement regulations on its side of the border. The Mexican government has tried almost everything, but it has not been successful. If the Mexican Government continues with the same approach to the drug cartel problems ultimately the drug cartels will overturn the government. Mexico is a civilized nation, and will not likely go to civil war over the drug cartels; still nobody has tried to take the drastic measures needed. La Familia is more brutal. La Familia is more motivated to keep their power than the government is to stop them; consequently they are impossible to stop. Works Cited Executive Office of the President of the United States. Marketing / Advertising / Operations Laura’s Laundromat will be utilizing various marketing and advertising methods to draw in new customers and to retain them. ? Card System: Instead of using quarter’s through out the store, Laura’s Laundromat will be implementing the Smart Card system that distributes a credit card to the customer that can be used through out the store on all washing machines and dryers. C ard Advantages: ? Less coin transactions – Money is collected less often and can be done in minutes rather than hours. ? Variable pricing – All vending prices can be increased in as little as $. 1 increments instead of the normal $. 25. This will be extremely helpful in off setting variable utility costs by being able to raise or lower prices at any time without having to touch the actual machines. With the older quarter systems, the owner could only go up or down in $. 25 increments. Therefore, either cutting his profits, or by losing customers with higher increases. ? Timely pricing – Since the card system is networked, sales and specials can be preprogrammed. This way you could run afternoon specials and actually set the price in advance, and at a predetermined time. All of the specials will spread the customer base from the peak hours to the off peak hours. To do this on a traditional coin-op system would take hours to change the prices in a store. ? Customer loyalty – When a customer leaves the store, chances are they will still have credit on their card (since we will be charging odd amounts). Customers will be more determined to return next week to use up the remaining credit or add value to their card to finish the current week of laundry. ? Bonus Dollars – If a customer adds value to their card, Laura’s Laundromat can give a bonus credit if they add a specified amount to their card. Example: If the customer adds $20. 00 to their card, Laura’s Laundromat will add a bonus of $2. 00 to the card giving the customer a total of $22. 00. Instant coupons! 7 ? Additional features include: ? Vending: There will be one soda machine and one candy machine. ? This TV will broadcast various shows. One 40† flat panel TV will be located in the exercise area also broadcasting various shows. Another 40† flat panel TV will be placed above the washing machines. ? Children’s Entertainment: One 32† flat panel TV will be inset in the wall of the children’s play area with protective Plexiglas covering the screen. This TV will be attached to a DVD player in the office to play children’s programming. ? Advertisement: One 32† Flat panel TV will be placed in the entertainment area (no sound) and will be used for Power Point presentations to advertise Laura’s Laundromat’s specials and also for other local business advertisements. This system will heat only what water is needed at the time. This eliminates the need to keep large amounts of water heated at all times. It also eliminates the need for a continuous pilot light. This system combined with the water saving front loaders will save money on natural gas as well as water. ? Seating –Laura’s Laundromat will furnish two round tables with chairs in the entertainment area, including additional seating through out the store. There will also be a number of folding tables located near drying areas. 6. 0 Store Layout Laura’s Laundromat was designed to promote safety and efficiency. Please see the attached floor plan. Sample Essay About Embarrassing Situation

Sample Essay About Embarrassing SituationMany times an essay is required for a job interview, or a college paper. There are many questions that you must answer when writing this type of writing, and you must be careful not to go over the top. This means that you cannot make a long wordy paragraph or extra sentences at the end. It is very important to have a full idea about what you want to say in your essay. The first thing you need to do is come up with an outline of the essay. This will give you the basis on which you will begin writing. You need to outline all the points that you want to make, and what you plan to write about. Then you must come up with a topic that you want to cover. If you have a particular area of interest, it may not be too hard to choose a topic that has nothing to do with the job interview, but it does have some relevance to what you are trying to accomplish.Once you have your topic in mind, you need to start thinking about a variety of topics that relate to your topic, and also a variety of people's life, both current and former. If you are talking about someone in your family, or you just happened to meet them at a particular time, you need to go into a little bit more detail about what that person is like. You also want to think about what else they have been involved in throughout their life.Next, you can try to think about something that you have seen from the past, or something that you have seen from others, which is a current work, the same area, or a similar job. You want to give an example of this, and you will use this information to build up your reasoning and if possible the argument. You need to include the question, 'How will your position affect me?'If you don't want to write a story or a book, then you can use the story that you used to get your job. You can also use your own experiences to support what you are writing. All you need to do is think about what you want to say, and why you need to say it.To finish up the w hole topic, you can use a conclusion. You can do this with a specific example, and give the reason why you believe that you are right. You can add your contact information so that if anyone calls you, you can ask them if they have any questions, or if they need any information about your paper. You can also include this information to allow readers to reach out to you if they have any concerns.People are often reluctant to provide feedback because they fear that their information will be used against them in some way. Writing an essay does not have to be too difficult, or too detailed. You only need to get started. Everyone knows that people are afraid to be in an interview, and writing an essay is the same way.

Constitutional Reform essays

Constitutional Reform essays Explain and evaluate both the limits placed on Commonwealth power under the Constitution and the extension of that power through international law and elements of the Constitution. In the year 2001, The Australian nation will celebrate the reaching of a significant milestone one hundred years of government under our present constitution. As the anniversary approaches, it is important for all Australians to reflect on the present arrangements, and consider whether the limits placed on the Commonwealth government are going to restrict Australias ability to transform with the new millennium. Will the extension of the Federal governments power affect the stability of one hundred years of Australian government? In the nineteenth century, Australia was made up of different British colonies, with each colony able to make laws on its own behalf. As the end of the nineteenth century approached the Australian colonies started to recognise the advantages of having a federal council that could impose uniform systems of defence, immigration, banking, and currency. However, the colonies were concerned about giving up too much power; in particular the small less populated colonies did not want the more populated states to be in complete control. This problem was solved with the suggestion that each state have the same number of representatives in the upper house and on 1st of January 1900 the Commonwealth of Australia came into existence. The rationale behind federating was to achieve national unity and regional diversity; hence it was essential to have a division between state and federal of powers. Therefore, the Commonwealth Parliament was only given special and limited powers under the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act. These powers are listed in section 51 of the Australian Constitution and are known as the thirty nine heads of power. Items mentioned in this section include; trade and commerce, ...

Complements in English Grammar

Complements in English Grammar In grammar, a complement is a word or word group that completes the predicate in a sentence. In contrast to modifiers, which are optional, complements are required to complete the meaning of a sentence or a part of a sentence. Below youll find discussions of two common types of complements: subject complements (which follow the verb be and other linking verbs) and object complements (which follow a direct object). But as David Crystal has observed, the domain of complementation remains an unclear area in linguistic analysis, and there are several unresolved issues (Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics, 2011). Subject complements My uniform is torn and dirty. My uniform is a T-shirt and jeans.Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality.(Jules de Gaultier)Love is an exploding cigar we willingly smoke.(Lynda Barry) Object complements Jimmys teacher called him a troublemaker. The teachers remark made me angry. The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other names, too.(Mark Twain,  Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, 1885) Subject Complements Subject complements rename or describe the subjects of sentences. In other words, they complement the subjects. Many of these complements are nouns, pronouns, or other nominals that rename or provide additional information about the subject of the sentence. They always follow linking verbs. A less contemporary term for a noun, pronoun, or other nominal used as a subject complement is predicate nominative. He is the boss.Nancy is the winner. This is she.My friends are they. In the first example, the subject complement boss explains the subject he. It tells what he is. In the second example, the subject complement winner explains the subject Nancy. It tells what Nancy is. In the third example, the subject complement she renames the subject this. It tells who this is. In the final example, the subject complement they identifies the subject friends. It tells who the friends are.Other subject complements are adjectives that modify the subjects of sentences. They also follow linking verbs. A less contemporary term for an adjective used as a subject complement is predicate adjective. My coworkers are friendly. This story is exciting. In the first example, the subject complement friendly modifies the subject coworkers. In the second example, the subject complement exciting modifies the subject story.(Michael Strumpf and Auriel Douglas, The Grammar Bible. Henry Holt, 2004) Object Complements An object complement always follows the direct object and either renames or describes the direct object. Consider this sentence: She named the baby Bruce. The verb is named. To find the subject, ask, Who or what named? The answer is she, so she is the subject. Now ask, Whom or what did she name? She named the baby, so baby is the direct object. Any word following the direct object that renames or describes the direct object is an object complement. She named the baby Bruce, so Bruce is the object complement.(Barbara Goldstein, Jack Waugh, and Karen Linsky, Grammar to Go: How It Works and How to Use It, 4th ed. Wadsworth, 2013)The object complement characterizes the object in the same way as the subject complement characterizes the subject: it identifies, describes, or locates the object (as in We chose Bill as group leader, We consider him a fool, She laid the baby in the crib), expressing either its current state or resulting state (as in They found him in the kitchen vs. She made him angry). It is not possible to delete the object complement without either radically changing the meaning of the sentence (e.g. She called him an idiot - She called him) or making the sentence ungrammatical (e.g. He locked his keys in his office - *He locked his keys). Note that be or some other copula verb can often be inserted between the direct object and the object complement (e.g. I consider him to be a fool, We chose Bill to be group leader, They found him to be in the kitchen).(Laurel J. Brinton and Donna M. Brinton, The Linguistic Structure of Modern English. John Benjamins, 2010) Multiple Meanings of Complement Complement is one of the most confusing terms in scientific grammar. Even in one grammar, that of Quirk et al. (1985), we can find it being used in two ways: a) as one of the five so-called clause elements (1985: 728), (alongside subject, verb, object and adverbial):(20) My glass is empty. (subject complement)(21) We find them very pleasant. (object complement)b) as a part of a prepositional phrase, the part that follows the preposition (1985: 657):(22) on the table In other grammars, this second meaning is extended to other phrases. . . . It therefore appears to have very broad reference, to anything that is needed to complete the meaning of some other linguistic unit. . .   These two basic meanings of complement are neatly discussed in Swan [see below].(Roger Berry, Terminology in English Language Teaching: Nature and Use. Peter Lang, 2010)  The word complement is also used in a wider sense. We often need to add something to a verb, noun, or adjective to complete its meaning. If somebody says I want, we expect to hear what he or she wants; the words the need obviously dont make sense alone; after hearing Im interested, we may need to be told what the speaker is interested in. Words and expressions which complete the meaning of a verb, noun, or adjective are also called complements. Many verbs can be followed by noun complements or -ing forms with no preposition (direct objects). But nouns and adjectives normally need prepositions to join them to noun or -ing form complements.(Michael Swan, Practical English Usage. Oxford University Press, 1995) I want a drink, and then I want to go home.Does she understand the need for secrecy?Im interested in learning to fly.
